Anna Snowdon
Anna Snowdon moved to London from Sheffield to read for a BA in Illustration at Kingston University. After graduating, she began her career as an illustrator and textile artist. Following a move to Amsterdam, Snowdon started working with ceramics and this opened up a new and surprising world where 3D meets 2D and pure form becomes a means of self-expression. She uses pattern and repetition to play with the senses, delivering the unexpected. Snowdon explores how the interaction and juxtaposition of colour can evoke an emotional response. Her work serves as an allegory for the human experience, unfolding themes that parallel the order and chaos of being human, the delicate balance of relationships, and the strength needed to remain resilient in an increasingly unsettling world. She embraces the handmade, celebrating differences, and highlighting the bold and unique.
Anna Snowdon’s "Kimono Canvas Series" features simple graphic forms, hand built using slabs. Drawing from her previous career as a 2-dimensional artist, the linear shapes enable Snowdon to experiment with 2-dimensional patterns brought to life in 3D form. This series provides the ideal 'canvas' for exploring colour interactions and juxtapositions, and the instinctive mood these create. The beauty in the perfect imperfections of Snowdon’s deliberately hand-painted patterns reflects her reaction to an over-digitised world and the need for refreshed human connection. The comforting repetition and pattern work serve to soothe, bringing a sense of familiarity. Additionally, the medium of ceramics allows for a slower pace of focused calm.
