Sina Farrugia
Sina Farrugia Micallef was born and educated in Malta. She graduated with distinction from Mater Admirabilis College of Education in 1971. She studied art at the Malta School of Art, and ceramics at Tarġa Gap School for Crafts. Farrugia began teaching art and ceramics in 1971 and was appointed Head of the Department of Art and Education in 1994. She served as Officer for Art within the Directorate for Quality and Standards in Education from 2004 to 2012 and lectured within the Faculty of Education at the University of Malta until 2023.
In 1984, Farrugia established her own ceramics studio and furthered her ceramics studies in England at Brunel University and in private workshops, where she collaborated with various potters specialising in different techniques. She has participated in numerous collective exhibitions and has held several solo exhibitions in Malta, Germany, France, England, Rhodes, Cyprus, and the US. She initiated the Cyprus-Malta exhibitions in 2004 and was a guest artist at the Commonwealth Marquee during the Art in Action Festival in England in 2012.
For Farrugia, working with clay is a natural and intuitive expression of emotions and ideas. Her work rises from personal experiences within her everyday life, including relationships, sorrows, pleasures, and pains. The themes that Farrugia works with are predominantly drawn from nature, poetry, and mythology, reflecting her deep connection to these sources of inspiration.
