Nico Conti

Nico Conti is a Maltese artist residing in London. After earning a BA in Fine Arts from the Institute for the Creative Arts in Malta in 2016, he moved to London to study ceramics at the Royal College of Art. During his time at the RCA, Conti received various awards and was invited to present his 3D-printed work to HRH The Prince of Wales. At the RCA, Conti explored innovative processes, combining his passion for material with his inquisitive nature. He has since relocated his studio back to Malta.
Conti’s work reflects nostalgic memories of nature and religious architecture. Rooted in the tradition and heritage of his upbringing, his art is deeply autobiographical. By pairing humble materials like clay with cutting-edge 3D printing technology, Conti imbues his creations with qualities of elegance, balance, luxury, and beauty.
The “Woven Lace of Porcelain” series showcases an innovative blend of traditional craft and modern technology through 3D-printed porcelain. Each piece consists of a long, thin strand of porcelain intricately woven to mimic the delicate textures of fabric or lace. The work explores the contrast between the softness of fabric and the rigidity and resilience of porcelain. Influenced by classical forms, the objects serve no functional purpose other than to highlight the inherent beauty of the material. Conceptually, the works celebrate technological advancement by pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the world of craft. By being produced in collaboration with a 3D printer, they redefine traditional porcelain artistry, merging the old with the new to create something uniquely contemporary.
