Ioulia Chante
Ioulia Chante is an architect and ceramicist whose artistic practice focuses on product design, utilising clay as the primary medium. Her academic background is rooted in engineering, functionality, and detailing, which in turn has influenced her to explore alternative materials in order to realise her vision for crafts within architecture.
Having transitioned from a successful architectural career to being a full-time ceramicist, Chante’s work intricately navigates the realms of form, material, and texture. Drawing deep inspiration from the natural world, her creations oscillate between realism and surrealism, bringing a captivating 'monster world' into tangible existence.
By merging functional structures with surrealistic elements, Chante uses scenographic storytelling to comment on contemporary society. Her work employs everyday objects to reflect and critique current human conditions, blending functional design with imaginative narratives.
Everyday functional objects are transformed into portals of introspection within the subconscious and unconscious mind. Each familiar item is imbued with layers of meaning and metaphor. Chante's work becomes a mirror, reflecting the universal truths that bind us all—raw feelings, shared mental struggles, hidden anxieties, and our deepest desires and fears.
