Julie Apap

Julie Apap (1948–2011) was a Maltese ceramicist and throughout her career, she exhibited her work in Malta, the US, Egypt, and Croatia. She studied ceramics in the UK and Malta and later taught the subject at a secondary school and at her own studio, The Pot Studio, in Msida. The Pot Studio served as a hub for several women artists during the early 2000s.
Between 1990 and 2006, Apap participated in a variety of solo and group exhibitions, including those at the Mdina Cathedral Museum, the National Museum of Archeology in Valletta, the California Institute of Integral Studies, and Lilliput Ceramics in Zagreb. In 2000, she also participated in the 5th Cairo Biennale for International Ceramics.
Julie Apap was deeply inspired by Malta's weathered limestone, deep blue seas, bright sunlight, and Neolithic temples. Her pottery, primarily crafted from stoneware on the wheel, transforms into ritualistic artefacts imbued with primordial symbols such as spirals, labyrinths, and geometric motifs. Each piece told its own story, reflecting the energy and aura she felt when visiting ancient temples. Apap’s work was infused with a sense of peace and belonging, echoing the ancient connection she experienced at these sacred sites.
